The RHS Civic Youth Corps is bringing community members together with cookies, culminating in its baking and eating contest Friday night, Feb. 5.
The group will host the "Bake Someone Happy" event at 6:30 p.m. in the Ridgewood Community Center. The contest will include high school students and senior citizens.
"One of the most exciting things is bringing them together," said Ridgewood Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck, the club's advisor. "Definitely the youth energizes the seniors, and we learn from the younger generations. I just think that's incredible."
Contestents for the eating and baking contests could each win $50 gift cards. Local chefs will serve as judges for the baking portion, fellow organizer Deanna Schablik said.
The event will also have music and card games.
Schablik, who works at the community center, said most of Ridgewood's events seem to be separate based on age or other demographics. The cookie contest will bring them together, she said.
"What better way than food," she told Daily Voice. "How do you get high school students to do something? You have food."
The Civic Youth Corps started in September and allows students to exchange ideas and learn more about the town. Group Vice President Christian Seremetias said holding events like the cookie contest will help get the word out about their club.
Club President Sophia Chapman said she's not sure how many people will attend but it should be exciting.
"High school students are notoroius for just showing up," she said of the expected turnout.
